Skiing in France
The French Alps offer a wide variety of skiable terrain. Sure, people think of the Swiss Alps, the Italian Alps, or even the Austrian Alps, but don't dismiss the French Alps. There is some terrific skiing there.
Trois Vallées
Courchevel, Méribel and Val Thorens Ski Resorts are the fundamental components of a vast ski area called the Trois Vallées (Three Valleys).
Courchevel's sophistication, shopping and joie de vie, attracts some of society's notables. Go here if you want to rub elbows with the rich and famous. While the resort scores 3/5 in most areas, their snow conditions and groomed runs generally score 4/5.
Méribel's claim to fame is its amazing high-speed, high-capacity gondolas that can deliver skiers to the peak in record numbers, and in record time. This area is much more family-oriented, offering 150 kilometres of groomed trails.
Val Thorens is the highest of the three (and, in fact, in all of Europe). Here you can enjoy 600 kilometres of runs in the largest ski area in the world.
Paradiski Area
Comprised of Les Arcs and La Plagne this bowl shaped ski area is surrounded on the west, south, and east sides by mountains that help to preserve the snow, so the conditions are always 5/5. This is a terrific resource for the beginning skier to find their comfort zone, however 50% of the area is dedicated to advanced skiers. They cover the whole spectrum and everyone will find something suitable here.
Val d’Isere Ski Resort
Offerings 300 km of groomed runs might be enough for most people, but dissatisfied with this, the operators of Val d’Isere also have over 25,000 acres of lift-serviced Off-Piste adventure area.
Spend your day exploring and then peruse the village for that Ultra-French gastronomic experience. Oh yes! If you love French cooking and impressive skiing this should probably be on your to-do list.
Long runs
France possesses the two longest downhill ski runs in the world. The longest is Off-Piste while the other is groomed and tended.
The Off-Piste route, named Vallée Blanche, is not a tended route, nor is it a marked route. For those familiar with the Off-Piste experience the mountains themselves are not too scary, and intermediate skill will get you through this area, but it is best to hire a guide. They'll be able to tell you that when you're looking around from the summit of Aiguille de Midi you're actually seeing three different countries including France, Switzerland, and Italy, all in one breathtaking view.
More importantly, of course, they can steer you away from the hazards and make sure you don't shoosh right by and miss some of the spectacular crevasses you can ski or traverse.
Fair warning: this is not a single continuous trail for the full 22 kilometres. There's a break toward the end where you have to walk up out of the valley to get to the beginning of the final section that takes you down into Chamonix, France. Of course, after all that skiing, only the most brazen braggart would claim they didn't want to have a rest, s'truth!
The other, The Sarenne in Alpe d’Huez, comes in at 19 km on the Piste map, but only 16km on the Alpe D’Huez Home Page. In either case, that is a long, long trip.
